LG dryer tumbling but leaving clothes cold in Chicago? What the flow sense codes mean, what actually fails, and what the repair costs.
An LG dryer that tumbles but leaves the load cold is almost always one of four things: a blocked exhaust duct, one tripped leg of the 240-volt breaker, a blown thermal fuse, or a failed heating element. LG is unusual in that the machine often warns you before any of that breaks - a D80, D90 or D95 code is the dryer telling you the duct is restricted, and that restriction is what kills the fuse and the element next.
They are LG's flow sense readings, and they mean the exhaust duct is roughly 80, 90, or 95 percent blocked. They are not a fault in the dryer - they are a warning about the ductwork behind it. In Chicago that reading turns up constantly for a plain structural reason: in a two-flat or a vintage bungalow the dryer usually sits in the basement, and the run out to daylight can be twenty or thirty feet of duct with several elbows. Every foot and every elbow catches lint. If you see D80 or higher, clear the duct before you buy a single part.
Heat and tumble are separate systems, which is why the drum can spin perfectly while the clothes stay cold. On an electric LG the usual culprits are a blown thermal fuse, a burnt-out heating element assembly, a failed thermostat or thermistor, or half of the 240-volt supply lost at the breaker. On a gas LG it is normally the igniter, the flame sensor, or the gas valve coils. Notice the pattern: most of those parts fail because the dryer ran hot behind a clogged duct, not because they simply wore out.
Most LG dryers built in the last decade carry Smart Diagnosis, which transmits the machine's stored fault data as an audio tone. Open the LG ThinQ app, choose Smart Diagnosis, hold your phone's microphone against the marked spot on the control panel, and start the routine from the panel when the app prompts you. It repairs nothing, but it does tell you - and your tech - whether the dryer has actually logged a heat fault, which is what keeps a perfectly good heating element from being replaced for no reason.
No. There is no heat reset on the machine. Three separate things get mistaken for one: unplugging the dryer for five minutes clears the control board, the 240-volt breaker in your panel can lose one leg while the drum still turns on the other, and the thermal fuse is a one-time part that cannot be reset at all. Cycle the breaker fully off and back on before you assume anything has failed.
Anything beyond that means opening the cabinet on a 240-volt appliance, and on a gas model it means working at the burner. Leave both to a tech.
Expect a diagnostic fee of roughly 70 to 120 dollars, normally credited toward the work if you approve it. A thermal fuse replacement usually lands around 150 to 250 dollars, an electric heating element assembly around 200 to 350 dollars, and a gas igniter or valve coils around 200 to 375 dollars. Against the price of a new machine, an LG under about ten years old is nearly always worth repairing.
My LG shows D90 but it still heats - do I need a repair? Not yet, and that is the point of the code. It is the warning stage. Clear the duct now and you may never pay for the fuse or element a blocked duct would eventually cost you.
Can I replace an LG thermal fuse myself? On an electric model it is a reachable part for a confident DIYer with the dryer unplugged. The catch is the same every time: it blew for a reason, and a new fuse fitted behind a clogged duct will blow as well.
My LG heats but takes three cycles to dry a load - is that the same fault? Yes, caught earlier. Long dry times are the airflow problem before it becomes a no-heat problem, and it is the cheapest moment to fix it.
