LG washer sitting full of water in Chicago? What an OE code means, where the drain pump filter hides, and what you can safely check yourself.
An LG washer that will not drain almost always shows an OE error code, and on a front-loader the cause is usually the drain pump filter behind the small door at the lower right of the cabinet. Clogged filter, kinked drain hose, or a blocked standpipe account for the large majority of no-drain calls we take in Chicago, and all three are things you can check yourself in about fifteen minutes before anyone comes out.
OE stands for outlet error: the machine ran its drain cycle, waited, and still sensed water in the tub. It is a symptom code, not a diagnosis - it tells you water did not leave, never why. Two nearby codes get confused with it. IE is an inlet error, meaning water is not coming in, which is the opposite problem. dE or dE1 is a door-lock fault, and a front-loader that cannot confirm the door is locked will refuse to drain and spin at all, so a dE can look exactly like a drain failure from the outside. Check which letter you actually have before you start pulling hoses.
On LG front-load machines it is behind a small hinged panel at the bottom right corner of the front. Open it and you will find two things: a short drain hose with a cap, and the filter itself as a round knob. Pull the small hose first and drain into a shallow baking pan, emptying it as many times as it takes - a stalled LG drum can hold several gallons and it will not wait for you. Only then twist the filter counter-clockwise and pull it out. Expect coins, hairpins, bra wires, felted lint, and the occasional sock. Rinse the mesh under a tap, clear the housing opening with a finger, and seat the filter firmly on the way back in or the next wash will leak onto the floor. LG top-loaders are different: most have no user-accessible filter, and the pump sits under the tub where it is a technician's job.
On LG models made in roughly the last decade, yes, partially. Holding the power button while the machine plays its tone into the LG ThinQ app (or over a phone call to LG support) reads out stored fault data. It is genuinely useful for confirming which code is stored when the display is hard to read, but it will not distinguish a clogged filter from a failed pump motor - both report the same drain fault. Treat it as a way to confirm the code, not to skip the physical checks.
Then work outward. Pull the washer forward and look at the drain hose for a kink or a crushed section, especially in a tight Chicago laundry closet or a basement nook where the machine gets shoved back hard against the wall. Check how far the hose is pushed into the standpipe - too deep and it siphons or seals, and it should sit no more than six to eight inches in. In older two-flats and bungalows the standpipe itself is often the real problem: decades of lint and detergent scale narrow it until it backs up on a fast pump-out, which shows as water rising in the pipe rather than in the drum. If the hose is clear and the standpipe drains fine, what is left is the pump motor, the pressure sensor, or the control board, and that is where a service call earns its money.
Usually yes. A drain pump replacement is one of the cheaper appliance repairs there is, and LG direct-drive machines commonly run well past a decade, so a pump on an otherwise healthy six-year-old washer is an easy call. Can I run a cycle with water still sitting in the drum? Do not. Drain it manually through the filter hose first - forcing another cycle just makes the pump work against a load it cannot move, and a wash that ends in standing water starts smelling within a day or two.
Why does my LG drain but not spin? That points at the door lock, the lid switch on top-loaders, or a badly unbalanced load rather than the pump. An LG that will not confirm its door is locked skips the spin entirely and leaves laundry soaked.
Does hard water cause drain problems? Indirectly. Chicago tap water is moderately hard, and scale plus undissolved detergent builds a film in the pump housing and standpipe over years. Using less detergent than the cap suggests and running an occasional tub-clean cycle genuinely helps.
