Why Is My Washer Not Draining? Common Causes and Fixes

Washer left standing in water? Here are the real reasons a washing machine won't drain and what a Chicago homeowner can safely check.

Opening the lid to a tub full of gray water is one of the most common washer failures we see across Chicago. The good news: a washer that will not drain is usually a very fixable problem, and often an inexpensive one. Here is what is actually going on.

The usual suspects

Most no-drain problems trace to one of a handful of parts. A clogged drain pump - jammed by a sock, coin, or hairpin - is the classic culprit. A kinked or blocked drain hose stops water from leaving. A failed drain pump motor will not move water at all. And a broken lid switch or door lock can make a top- or front-loader refuse to enter the drain and spin cycle even when everything else is fine.

What you can safely check yourself

Before calling anyone, unplug the machine and try a few safe checks. Look at the drain hose behind the washer for kinks or a too-deep insertion into the standpipe. Make sure the load is not badly unbalanced, which can stall a cycle. On many front-loaders there is a small filter or coin trap behind a lower access panel - clearing it can solve the problem outright. Keep a towel and shallow pan handy, because water will come out.

Chicago hard water and stacked city units

Chicago's hard water leaves mineral scale that, over years, can gum up pumps and valves faster than in soft-water regions. And in city apartments and two-flats, stacked washer-dryer units are extremely common - their compact drain pumps clog easily and are tucked into tight closets that make DIY awkward and messy. Those are frequent service calls for us.

When to call a pro

If the hose and filter are clear and it still will not drain, you are likely looking at the pump or a control problem - jobs that mean pulling the machine apart. That is the point to bring in a tech rather than risk a flooded laundry room. Our Chicago washer repair team carries common pumps and parts to fix most no-drain failures in a single visit.
