Gas dryer tumbling but cold in Chicago? Why gas no-heat is a different repair from electric - igniter, flame sensor, coils, and what is safe to check.
A gas dryer that tumbles but leaves clothes cold has almost always lost its flame, not a heating element - gas dryers do not have one. Four parts cause nearly every gas no-heat call in Chicago: the igniter, the flame sensor, the gas valve coils, and a tripped thermal fuse, with restricted vent airflow sitting behind more of those failures than most people expect. Only two of those checks are safe to do yourself.
An electric dryer makes heat by pushing 240 volts through a coiled element, so when it stops heating, the element, a thermostat, or half the breaker is usually the answer. A gas dryer burns natural gas instead: the igniter glows orange, the valve coils open, the burner lights, and a flame sensor confirms it. That is a sequence with four failure points rather than one, which is why a general dryer that will not heat gets diagnosed differently depending on the fuel it burns.
The behavior of the burner tells a technician most of the story. If the igniter never glows, it is usually a cracked igniter or a blown thermal fuse cutting power to the burner circuit. If the igniter glows bright and then goes out with no flame, the gas valve coils are the usual suspect - they weaken with age and stop opening the valve on demand. If the burner lights and shuts off after thirty seconds to a couple of minutes, that points at the flame sensor or at airflow so restricted the dryer is overheating and protecting itself. And a thermal fuse never fails at random: something made the dryer run too hot, and that something is nearly always the vent.
Two things, and no more. First, confirm the gas is actually on - if your range or water heater is also acting up the problem is the supply, and the shutoff valve behind the dryer can get bumped closed during a move or a floor repair. Second, deal with airflow: clean the lint trap, check that the exterior vent flap opens when the dryer runs, and have a long vent line professionally cleared. Confirm the breaker has not tripped too, because a gas dryer still needs 120 volts to turn the drum and fire the igniter. Anything past that - igniter, valve coils, burner assembly, gas line - belongs to a licensed technician.
Gas dryers are the norm in this metro, and our building stock works against them. In pre-war bungalows and two-flats the laundry sits in the basement, so the vent travels twenty or thirty feet through joists to reach an exterior wall - every foot and every elbow cuts airflow. Add a Chicago winter, when a vent flap can freeze partly shut and moist exhaust condenses inside a long duct, and lint stops moving out and starts packing in. That restriction is what cooks thermal fuses and shortens flame cycles, so a gas dryer here often fails for a reason that has nothing to do with the burner part you end up replacing.

Can I replace a gas dryer igniter myself? We would not. The igniter itself is a small ceramic part, but reaching it means opening the burner assembly next to a live gas line, and a reassembly mistake there is a gas leak rather than a failed repair.
Why does my gas dryer heat for a few minutes and then go cold? That short-cycle pattern usually means a weak flame sensor or an overheating cabinet caused by a blocked vent. Clear the vent first - it is free, and it is the fix surprisingly often.
Is it dangerous to keep using a gas dryer that will not heat? Running it repeatedly with no heat is not a good idea, and a restricted lint-packed vent is a genuine fire hazard whether or not the dryer is heating. Unplug it, shut the gas valve behind it, and get it looked at.
