Clothes still damp after a full cycle? Here's why a dryer stops heating, what's safe to check, and when gas dryers mean calling a pro.
A dryer that tumbles fine but leaves clothes cold and damp is a frustrating, and surprisingly common, failure. The heat is gone but the motor still runs. Here is what causes it and how to think about the fix - including an important safety note for the many gas dryers in Chicago homes.
On electric dryers, the most common causes are a burned-out heating element, a blown thermal fuse (a safety device that trips when the dryer overheats), or a failed thermostat or thermistor. On gas dryers, no heat often points to a bad igniter, flame sensor, or gas valve coil. A tripped fuse or one half of a 240-volt breaker can also kill the heat while the drum keeps spinning.
Before assuming a broken part, check airflow. A clogged lint vent is the number one cause of long dry times and overheating - and it is a genuine fire hazard. Clean the lint trap every load and have the full vent line cleared periodically, especially in older Chicago homes and condos where dryer vents often run long distances through walls to reach an exterior wall. Restricted airflow also trips thermal fuses, so a clogged vent can masquerade as a heating-part failure.
You can safely clean the lint trap, inspect the exterior vent flap for lint buildup, and confirm the breaker has not tripped. That is about the extent of safe DIY on a heating problem.
This is the firm line. Anything involving the gas igniter, valve, or line on a gas dryer should be handled by a trained technician. Gas work carries real risk, and a misdiagnosed gas dryer is not worth the danger. The same caution applies to the high-voltage element circuit on electric units.
If the vent is clear and your dryer still will not heat, it is a part - element, fuse, thermostat, or igniter - and a job for a tech. Our Chicago dryer repair service diagnoses the exact cause, replaces the part, and cleans the vent line while we are there.
