A Kenmore dryer that tumbles normally but leaves the load cold has a heating fault, and the fastest way to get it fixed is to stop hunting for "Kenmore" parts. Kenmore is a store brand, not a factory - Sears sold machines built by other manufacturers under the Kenmore badge, and the first three digits of the model number tell you which one. Read that prefix first and you know whose heating element, igniter, or thermal fuse the dryer actually takes.

Where is the model number on a Kenmore dryer?

Look for the rating plate inside the door opening, on the front rim of the drum, or on the back panel near the top. The model number is the long one that starts with three digits, a period, and then the rest of the number - for example 110.62952100. That leading three-digit block is the manufacturer code, and it is the single most useful piece of information on the machine. Write it down before you order anything or call anyone, because a tech who hears it can bring the right parts on the first visit instead of the second.

What do the Kenmore model prefixes mean?

Four codes cover the great majority of Kenmore dryers in Chicago homes:

  • 110 - built by Whirlpool. By far the most common, and the reason so many Kenmore dryers share parts with Whirlpool, Maytag, and Amana machines.
  • 417 - built by Frigidaire (Electrolux). Different element and thermostat layout from the Whirlpool platform.

A 110 Kenmore and a Whirlpool of the same era are close to the same dryer wearing different badges. That is good news: parts are common and inexpensive, and a no-heat repair on one is routine.

Why won't my gas Kenmore dryer heat?

If the model number ends in a gas variant and the laundry area has a gas line, watch the burner through the small inspection port at the lower front while a cycle runs. If the igniter glows bright orange and then goes dark with no flame, the fault is usually the flame sensor or the gas valve coils - the coils weaken with age and stop opening the valve while the igniter still works fine. If the igniter never glows at all, suspect a blown thermal fuse or a failed igniter. Look, but do not fix: gas valves and burner assemblies are not a DIY job, and a mistake there is a gas leak rather than a wasted afternoon.

Why won't my electric Kenmore dryer heat?

On an electric machine the usual suspects are the heating element, the thermal fuse, and the high-limit thermostat. Because a thermal fuse is a one-time safety device that blows when the dryer overheats, and overheating almost always means restricted airflow. Chicago duct runs are unusually punishing: in the bungalows and two-flats of Portage Park, Jefferson Park, and the Northwest Side, the dryer sits in a basement and vents twenty or more feet through several elbows to reach daylight, and every elbow collects lint. Clean the lint screen, then go outside while the dryer runs and confirm the exterior vent flap actually opens under airflow. Replacing a fuse without clearing that duct just buys you a repeat failure in a few months.

What does a Kenmore no-heat repair cost in Chicago?
